A decade in review...or maybe not....
Its the first day of the new year, and also the first of a new decade....a time when newspapers, blogs, social media etc look at the year gone by, the decade gone by....some at economy, the markets, or the nation itself...others at their own personal selves....
What about my own look-back? But before that, why do we look back at all at the past?
One possible reason is ofcourse if you have memories worth cherishing..., of great times, of major successes...even of excuriating failures....
The other reason is to look back and learn from the past....
But here's the thing, is there such a thing called learning from the past , at all? Something that can be applied in day to day everyday life?
Even if there is, isnt a decade too long a time? Or sometimes even a year? Is whats relevant for you when you are 15 remotely relevant at 25? Or whats relevant to you at 25 relevant at 35? Or whats relevant at 35 relevant at 45?
Human life, even if for 80-90 years, is ultimately short in the grand scheme of things. For nations, economies, markets, things which are near eternal, or atleast have a much longer shelf life than humans, a decade is hardly a lot of time.
The problem in the real world is you live only one life :) And a lot many things you do in life have a very very short shelf life.....ofcourse you could have done things differently in the past, but even if you know what really you should have done in the past, is it of much use really?
I cant claim to speak for everyone, but most of the times I "learn" what I should have done at a particular point of time in life, that particular point of time is long gone and isnt in anyway replicable in future. If only I could have applied all the learnings I learnt by going back in the past, I would have been a far more successful, far more happier person...but that's not how life works sadly....so instead of learning from the past...most of the time....all you have are regrets and what ifs really....
Or may be its just me....learning things too late.... :)
Maybe its just that years and decades are too long a time frame, and the real look back should be on things you did yesterday, or a few weeks back....may be because life isnt all that long, you need to be dynamic enough to learn from the past quickly enough for it to stay relevant!
