We all land up on LinkedIn ;) ( or why LinkedIn will be the last man standing)
For a lot of us, our first brush with social media would have been in the world of "Orkut" . A few years later though , it was nowhere to be seen.
The social media cycle of popularity is fairly simple: at first, there's this relatively cool but new fairly unknown medium. Then it keeps gaining popularity , till it gets to the point where anyone and everyone joins. Then it becomes less cool. Slowly another platform captures the imagination. The same cycle then repeats.
This cycle can play out quite slowly ( think Facebook) or very fast ( think clubhouse). But it happens all the same. Facebook today for all practical purposes is a slowly dying social media platform. Instagram and Snap has better creds to the cool quotient now but it too will follow the same path.
But there's also another longer cycle at play. And that is , we ourselves become less cool :) To put it more simply, we just age:). We are no longer the early social media adopting guy in our twenties or teens, but the slightly late in there chaps. We ourselves become part of the "anyone and everyone".
And there are other factors at play. As you age, typically there's also less things to share. Life tends to become more static. And those in your circle also have less interest in those things which you do share --- now the popular girl from college might still get a 100 likes or responses on whatever she shares , even years later but we are talking ordinary people here! People just become more absorbed in their day to day ennui to bother knowing much about ennui of other people.
Then there are other social media networks which are just too niche : a reddit or a Twitter. Sure there's interesting stuff which you find there but there are other disadvantages there: including the platforms being "too open " to say too many things. And too niche.
There is one exception to all this though : LinkedIn.
I don't know about you but I find my LinkedIn feed much more active than my FB feed these days ! LinkedIn really has gone from strength to strength
This is the social media platform for the grown ups. This is where we can do what grown ups love to do: give gyan. And it's a very equal opportunity space -- the slacker from school or college can give the same level of gyan on the importance of hard work when you grow up, as the topper.Everybody's gyan is treated equally here, unlike the example I mentioned a few paragraphs back.
And then unlike other aspects of life which can be static, there's always some amount of stuff that keeps happening in the professional world. People change jobs, move from one field to another. There's always some update or the other. There's always somebody that you can find to wonder, damn how did this guy land here ? Or somebody instead to feel inspired by. And it's a very impersonal medium, so an even larger number of people to keep a bird's eye view on
This is also where we can find and share deeper meanings to our everyday ennui. Maybe even add a management lesson to go with it. And also find a lot of takers for the same.
Elsewhere , everybody has a story but only few have an audience. But this is an exception. Here, Everybody has a story and everybody also has an audience!!
This is also where you can plug your profession, your workplace. Maybe in some cases even earn a few brownie points to go with it!
And if all that was not enough, you can also now conduct polls of your followers on topics ranging from the most profound to the most bizarre
It all happens here. And like fine wine, this place only ages with time and as we age. This platform isn't going to become less cool ever and neither are we on this platform. Its going to be the last man standing among social media platforms!
And if there's nothing else, as the famous meme on LinkedIn goes, you can always comment for better reach there.
Or well, you can comment for better reach here! ;)
P.S : Just joking ( and an attempt at humor) on most observations made here, so don't take it too literally :)
