Could alternate universes be better?
"Could alternate universes be better?" is a question that we occasionally pause to ask ourselves. We are talking ofcourse about the alternate universes in which the self is involved. A different choice made, luck playing out slightly different and several such what ifs.
But in thinking about these alternate universes, if you go too much into the hypotheticals, then it's possible you are no longer talking about you being the same person itself! Say you were just born into multi generational super wealth. Or The reverse. Beyond a particular point, those don't make much sense because you just wouldn't be the same person in any way anymore. The ones that do are where you retain the essence of who you are but just do or the world does just a trifle diffrently.
But that one or two divergent paths in the universe are only the starting points. Presumably each of those itself could lead to multiple universes even from that point. But we can narrow it further. Say we retain the essence of the personality of who we are till that particular point. Say we know the very same things we knew until then and nothing better. And then chart out a most probable alternate path, most probable is hard to figure out still for there is so much chance in life but our own current lives and those around us do give a clue on those. That intermixed with broadly the essence of who we are being retained
So back to the question, could alternate universes be better? Or to rephrase it, could MY alternate universies be better?
I think there are certain points in time where I could argue that yes maybe it could be. But mostly these would be incremental changes really I would think. :)
Does it mean I have got a lot of what I want? Definitely not. But I wonder if having got what say an X of what I want, I would have still been able to, with the knowledge of what I had until a point in time, with what I was or have been up until that point in time, been able to use that to chart a totally different course. Is it possible that I might have instead been overwhelmed?
Does it mean that I haven't had bad luck at all? Hell no! But I wonder if I would have really used a few odd dollops of good luck or serendipity to have created something totally different in my universe
Does it mean I have made all the decisions I have wisely? Again hell no. But knowing what I know and being what I am , and also knowing what I am? That's a smaller subset of No's but still a no. But i guess once you start narrowing it that way, it becomes a lot more incremental like i alluded to
Or maybe I am just being limited in my imagination , too influenced by the experiences of "THIS universe" of mine :)
Which brings to another question. If you think the alternate " rational" imagination limited universes weren't going to be all that different, should you be happy about it or sad about it? I mean you can look at it this way and say hey, given what I am and what I knew and even with a fair deal of serendipity, "this is the universe that is meant to be, the most probable realistic one of them all" Or you could look at it and say well "even with all that possible fair bit of serendipity "is this still the universe that was meant to be?!"
Well i guess the way you answer that depends upon your perception of this universe, the past, the present, and more importantly the multiple possible universes that still exist from this point.
